History of the University
- Texas A&M opened in 1876 as Texas’ first public institution of higher learning and has awarded more than 500,000 degrees.
- Texas A&M is one of a select few academic institutions in the nation to hold triple federal designations as a Land-Grant, Sea-Grant and Space-Grant university.
- Texas A&M operates branch campuses in Galveston, McAllen and Qatar and centers in Mexico City, Costa Rica, and Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy.
- The Corps of Cadets, with over 2,400 members, commissions more officers than any institution other than the nation’s service academies.
- Texas A&M enrolls more than 5,000 international students from over 120 countries and sends more than 5,330 students on Education Abroad programs each year involving over 100 countries.
- Approximately 11,000 students live on the Texas A&M University campus.
